Competition Schedule The World Salsa Championships will be held from February 20th–23rd, 2014 (Thursday to Sunday) at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (N100 Series Room, 1 Expo Drive, WANCHAI) during Hong Kong Salsa Festival 2014 with the Award Ceremony being held on the evening of Sunday, February 23rd, 2014.
Anyone who has not received regular compensation for competition, instruction or performances. For example, if you have ever received money for a performance at a major salsa festival, taught regularly for compensation weekly or monthly, or ever competed in the professional category in any salsa competition you are considered a professional. Occasional and rare instances for receiving money for any local performance or one time teaching work is permitted under the student/amateur category.
LENGTH OF DANCE
The suggested length of the routine is approximately 2 minutes. Maximum length is 3 mins. (Length of dance over 3 mins may incur penalty from the judges. You may check with the orrganizers regarding the length of music you will use if unsure of whether or not it may incur penalty).#Update: 17 Feb: SOLO competitors. We understand the length of music can be shorter for example 1 min 30 secs or thereabouts, is fine. JUDGING PROCEDURE
The couples are expected to have a one prepared and choreographed routine for the competition. The choreography can be danced on a selected break (eg On1 or On2) and this break should be consistent throughout your routine. Any styles of salsa can be used in the choreography. Routines must ideally reflect the following: Turn Patterns, Open Shines, Footwork, Floorcraft, Dance Technique, Musicality. Tricks, dips, and lifts are also permitted.
Judges for the World Salsa Championships (HK) at the sole discretion of the Competition Director. Any interpretation of any aspect of these Rules and Regulations or any decision involving any other aspect of the competition will be rendered by the Competition Director and the Head Judge of the Panel. The Committee will render a judgment in an effort to ensure that the competition proceeds in a manner consistent with the general spirit and goals of the competition. Any persons / couples that do not adhere to the terms and procedures of these “Rules and Regulations” will be subject to disqualification from the competition and will automatically forfeit any right to any prizes or awards presented by the competition. In the event of any dispute, final decision will be made by the Competition Director and the Head Judge of the Panel.
Dancers entering to the competition have to be 17 years or older and have residency or nationality in the country they are representing. If dancers in couple or teams hold residencyin different countries then they can choose to represent one of those countires or a combination of 2 countries.
All competitors are required to have valid tickets to gain access to all Hong Kong Salsa Festival events (i.e. night parties, workshops, performance and competition events when competitors are not competing). If at any time competitors pulled out from the competition, competitors are required to pay the difference in the full pass rate. No refund will be made.
Showmanship & Appearance n/10 Costume, hair, make-up, presentation, exposure, projection, stage presence and attitude. How professional did the couple appear? Was the couple able to interact with the audience and to get a positive reaction?
Partnering n/10 Lead and follow, unity between partners, couple interaction. Did the couple show true lead and follow technique or was each dancer just executing steps on their own? Were the couple able to show true connection and interaction with each other?
Choreography & Musicality n/10 Originality and creativity, use of new and distinct steps or moves, level of difficulty, musicality, complexity. Was this a Salsa (Bachata) choreography? How difficult and original was the choreography? How well was the couple able to interpret the music (mood, accents, breaks, etc.)?
Technique & Execution n/10 Balance, grace and the quality of the movements of the choreography. How good was the technique and movements? For example, was there good dance technique, balance in spins, good basic step technique? How well was the routine executed? Was the routine performed flawlessly?
Timing & Rhythm n/10 Precision, time and perseverance used to execute the dance. Dancer must start and continue their dance on the count that they start on (for example whether on 1 or on 2). Did the couple maintain proper timing and rhythm? Was the couple able to show dynamic changes in their movements while staying in the correct timing?
X-Factor n/10 Star quality!
Each of the above will be scored from 1 point (the lowest) to 10 points (the highest). Judges are allowed to use half marks (e.g. 8.5).Update: 22 Feb: In case of a tie, the judges may cast votes as a tie-breaker.The organizer may choose whether or not to waive this option Elimination Round
ELIMINATION ROUNDS FEBRUARY 20th -21st, 2014 (THURSDAY TO FRIDAY) The World Salsa Championships will be divided into THREE rounds of competitions depending on the number of registered competitors:- 1) Qualifiers (or 1/4 finals) - THURSDAY, February 20th 2) Semis (or 1/2 finals) - FRIDAY, February 21st 3) FINALS - SATURDAY & SUNDAY, February 22nd & 23rd
SEMI-FINAL placings will determine who goes first, such that the 6th place semi finalist will be the first competitor to perform during the finals and the highest placed semi finalist will be the last to perform in the finals.
A bonus of 3 points will be awarded to any finalist whose semi-final performance is different from their finals performance.
There will be maximum of 6 FINALISTS in each category bidding for the title of World Champions of 2014 Here is the schedule details:

So all teams will compete for TEAM DIVISION with the prize money being 30K for Winners, 20K for 1st Runner-UP and 10K for 2nd Runner-UP SOLO competitors. AWARD CEREMONY FEBRUARY 23rd (SUNDAY) All winners (1st, 2nd and 3rd placings) are required to be at award ceremony for the presentation of prizes and trophies, media interviews, etc.
